Floating - How Life Moves

The continuum of life.

Floating, suspended and held by fluid matrix, embryological connections are clear.

Within seconds I can feel muscles release from the hold on bones, the membranous support of the salt water cradling and coaxing shoulders to drop, buttocks to let go. Leg bones start to unravel in hip sockets, moving outwards.

Heartbeat loud and persistent. No other sound. Breath regular.

Change. A pulsing ripple from feet through torso, ribs drawn open expanding outwards – hidden deep sea creature being propelled into a sideways movement. Inhale arrives and suspends in maximum reach outward. A resolve of sorts, the exhale wave drawing back, leaving gentle patterns in the sand.

I refind my skin boundary as I gently bump against container. Amusement, maybe even relief.

Heartbeat loud and persistent. No other sound. Breath regular.

Startle reflex plays out slowly… I am aware. I am let go, returned to the maternal presence of fluid, membrane, weight.

Breath teases internal spaces, clouds, candyfloss and sheep’s wool. Back tissue drops further.

Arms taken back, elbows bent. Seemingly symmetry starts to be challenged, the particularity of me as a unique curling fern comes to the fore. The rotation to the right in the thorax, the desire of the left arm to rotate inwards. A pattern I was born into, grew into and grew away from.

Arms return.

MMMMM. Legs begin a journey into moving internally, todays pinnacle of letting go.

Stillness. Heartbeat and breath have faded far away. A different pulse is where I am.

Thank you to Caryn McHose, Kevin Frank and Emilie Conrad.

Thank you to Satyam Yoga and Wellbeing Centre, for providing a little matrix of community, somewhere to hold and support Rolfing clients, and a wonderful floatation room.
